Name under which this drug is sold (Brand name): Botox
Active components: Botulinum toxin type A.
Inactive component: sodium chloride and human albumin
Botox:
Botox cosmetic contains botulinum toxic type A as its active ingredient. This component is derived from Closridium botulinum which is a bacterium. This cosmetic product is administered in low doses to treat certain conditions such as:
- Visual disorder called Strabismus – eyes not properly aligned and pointing to different directions
- Severe case of underarm sweating
- Spasmodic torticollis (Cervical dystonia) squeezing and twisting contractions in the shoulder and neck muscles
- Involuntary closing or blinking of the eyelids (Blepharospasm)
- To reduce and get rid of wrinkles as a temporary measure
This medicinal and cosmetic product acts by blocking or paralyzing certain nerve impulses or by relaxing or contracting certain muscles. Botox does not affect the muscles and nerves permanently. Its effects are temporary in nature and last for just months, say for 3 – 4 months.
In case of Botox's application in cosmetic field, this product is normally administered to people who have wrinkled skin (i.e. aged people). And in the medical field the effectiveness of Botox on young people is also debatable:
- Use of Botox on users younger than 16 years in case of cervical dystonia is not known.
- Use of Botox on users younger than 18 years in case of hyperhidrosis is not known.
- Use of Botox on users younger than 12 years in case of blepharospasm or strabismus is not known.
- It's not advisable to use Botox on people below 18 years of age.
- The use of Botox in treating certain other types of muscle contractions and severe sweating in other places other than underarms is not known.
Dosage and Usage:
Botox is usually available in the form of powder hence it must be diluted. Doctors usually perform this dilution process using preserved sterile saline liquid. The range of dilution is 1 cc to 2.5 cc and some times more. The units that are given depend upon the doctor who will decide based on the need of the patient, the area of inoculation, etc. Before inoculation the diluted Botox in the vial should be shaken well and must be checked for any particulate matter. The diluted solution is then drawn using a syringe and injected into the user. The diluted Botox should be used within 4 hours of dilution. Botox does not contain any preservative in it; hence as soon as Botox is diluted it should be kept in a freezer. Any residual solution after the procedure is completed should be discarded. Users of Botox won't experience any immediate symptoms in case of an overdose.
Indications:
Botox (Botulinum toxin) is used for treating the following conditions:
